Towards the end of 2012 we were approached by a client with an unusual project. He had salvaged timber from a pier which had been in his family holiday house at metung for 30 years. A severe storm had made the pier unsafe, and it had to be demolished. Our task was to use the original boards, with all their years of weathering and sun-bleaching, and make a family dining table which would be both practical and evocative of the old pier. Initially the table was to be a steel frame enclosing the boards, but after a few drafts it was decided that our ‘murphy’ table frame could be used with a clever floating top- where the glass is separated from the boards by custom fabricated, adjustable risers. The resulting table has both the solid feeling of the old pier and an ephemeral lightness resulting from the timbers appearing to float above the base. Looking through the 12mm thick, three metre long glass top to the boards below is akin to standing at the edge of the lake and looking through water at the old submerged pier.
